Who we are
El Zopilote was founded in 2002 by Cristiano and his family, and over time became a true multigenerational project. The early years were challenging, with no road or services on Ometepe, and everything built from scratch. In 2004 it evolved from an eco-hostel into a permaculture farm, offering learning about sustainability, tropical plants, mushrooms, and natural living, along with workshops and festivals.
In 2018 the project expanded with organic reishi and oyster mushroom production, plus a restaurant and pizzeria using fresh, homemade products.
Today Cristiano runs the farm with the support of friends, guests, and volunteers who have shaped El Zopilote into what it is.
