A Temazcal is an ancient purification and healing ceremony originating from the indigenous cultures of Central America, especially the pre-Columbian peoples of Mexico and surrounding regions. It takes place inside a small sweat lodge-like structure, traditionally made of stones and clay, where a stone stove is heated.
During the ceremony, the heat, steam, and aromatic herbs help to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit, promoting sweating, mindful breathing, and meditation. It is often accompanied by chants, music, drums, and symbolic rituals, creating a deep experience of connection with nature and oneself.
The Temazcal also represents the womb of Mother Earth, symbolizing rebirth and a profound connection with the Pachamama. Many people experience it as a rebirthing ceremony, emerging renewed and deeply grounded.
At El Zopilote, we organize a Temazcal almost every week in a natural and peaceful setting, away from the main cabins, immersed in the forest to ensure privacy, relaxation, and a close connection with the earth.
The price ranges from C$550 to C$900 per person, depending on the temazcalero leading the ceremony. Please keep in mind that we burn about one cubic meter of dry wood to heat the stones. Even though this is perfectly sustainable, tropical forests provide plenty of fallen dry wood, it is still a significant amount and contributes to the overall cost.
