The San Ramón Waterfall (Cascada San Ramón) is one of the must-see natural wonders of Ometepe. Located on the southern slope of Volcán Maderas, it offers a refreshing and rewarding hike through tropical vegetation, wildlife, and cool forest shade.

The trail begins at the biological station on the lower part of the volcano. From there, the hike to the waterfall typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your pace. Along the way, you’ll walk through dense forest, streams, flowers, birds, and, if you’re lucky, howler monkeys. At the end of the path awaits a tall, narrow waterfall dropping from the cliff, especially striking during the rainy season.

We warmly recommend this excursion to our guests. It’s a perfect half-day adventure for anyone who enjoys hiking and connecting with nature. However, please keep in mind that El Zopilote does not provide guides for this activity. The trail is straightforward and well-trodden, and most visitors complete it comfortably on their own.

Reaching the upper parking area can be very challenging with scooters or small motorbikes. The road becomes steep, rocky, and uneven.

  • It is possible, but difficult and not recommended for inexperienced drivers.

  • If you are unsure, we strongly suggest parking lower and walking the rest.
This avoids accidents and protects your rental vehicle.
