The Maderas Volcano Hike is one of the must-do adventures on Ometepe.
Maderas is an extinct volcano covered in lush cloud forest, full of wildlife, hidden petroglyphs, and occasional waterfalls.
The trail begins through farmlands, tropical orchards, and coffee plantations. As you climb higher, you enter the dense cloud forest, home to howler monkeys, tropical birds, orchids, and giant ferns. The temperature drops, the air becomes misty, and the atmosphere turns magical.
The highlight is the crater lagoon at the summit — a serene lake inside the ancient volcanic crater. Whether sunny or foggy, reaching it is always unforgettable.
The trail is challenging, with muddy and steep sections, but extremely rewarding for nature lovers and adventurous hikers.
